It is a simplified issue disability insurance product that was designed with an active clientele in mind and that offers coverage in the event of accident or soft tissue injury.

Coverage

  • 24-hour; or
  • Not work related (Accident or Soft Tissue Injury only).

Eligibility

You are eligible if you:

  • are between the ages of 18 to 69 inclusively;
  • currently hold remunerative work for at least eight months per year and 21 hours per week;
  • are not currently limited in terms of your movements or daily activities due to an injury or illness;
  • do not have a degenerative chronic disease or a permanent physical or intellectual impairment;
  • are a Canadian citizen or reside in Canada and meet certain criteria.

Main Coverages

Disability Insurance for workers, which provides for:

  • Coverage in the event of total disability resulting from an accident or soft tissue injury
  • Payment of a monthly benefit ranging from $500 to $6,000
  • Choice of the gross or net revenue method when determining your maximum available benefit
  • Non-integrated payment of the first $1,000 in benefits for the first two years
  • A benefit period of 2 years, 5 years or up to age 70
  • A waiting period of 0 days, 30 days or 119 days
  • Risk classified based on your occupation

Overhead Expense Insurance for small business owners, which provides for:

  • Coverage in the event of total disability resulting from an accident or soft tissue injury or an illness
  • Payment of a monthly benefit ranging from $500 to $6,000
  • A 2-year benefit period
  • A 30-day waiting period
  • Risk classified based on your occupation

Additional coverage

You benefit from the following additional coverages or clauses, at no extra cost:

  • Waiver of Premiums: releases you from the obligation to pay insurance premiums while totally disabled
  • Maintenance of Coverage when full-time Work Ceases: if you lose your job, take a parental leave or stop working temporarily, but have not retired, your disability insurance will remain in force for a maximum of 12 months
  • Guaranteed renewal of your insurance up to age 70
  • Extension of coverage up to age 75, without evidence of insurability
  • Occupational rehabilitation program: the professional services you need to learn new duties as well as payment of a benefit

Our Program’s Disability Insurance offers other optional benefits, such as:

  • Disability in the event of an illness: enhance your definition of total disability by including disability due to illness. All you have to do is answer a short health questionnaire. You can also get personalized coverage by selecting the amount of coverage, waiting period and benefit period that's right to you.
  • Partial Disability: without being totally disabled, you can receive benefits if you are unable to perform 50% of the duties of your regular occupation on a continuous basis, provided you are working full-time when you become partially disabled
  • Return of Disability Insurance Premiums: at age 55, 60, 65 or 70, you will be refunded 50% of all premiums paid under the Disability Insurance coverage, including the portion applicable to the Return of Premiums option, less any disability claims paid
  • Extension of the “Regular Occupation” Period: you can benefit from a definition of total disability based on your regular occupation for a 60-month period

If you lost your ability to earn an income, you could also lose the lifestyle you’ve created. An accident or serious illness can happen when you least expect it, leaving you unable to work and earn money. Your provincial health plan can help with the medical bills. But to replace lost income, you need disability insurance. Accident and sickness insurance is insurance that protects policyholders from losses of income due to being involved in an accident or getting a sickness that forces the person to stop working. It is similar to disability insurance and workers compensation in that it pays out a monthly benefit to replace the lost income.

Why do you need disability insurance?

The lifestyle you enjoy, your children’s college education, and your retirement savings all depend on your ability to earn a living. If you suddenly had less money coming in—plus additional money going out to cover bills related to your disability—where would the money come from to replace your lost income?

Even if you already have disability insurance through your employer, it may not be enough. Plus, if you change jobs, your employer-sponsored disability insurance will most likely end with your employment. What's more, disability benefits under the Canada Pension Plan (CPP) and Quebec Pension Plan (QPP) limit the benefits you can receive.

Also consider the probability of incurring a 90-day or longer total disability prior to age 65(1) (see chart below). When a disability lasts longer than 90 days, the length of that disability averages between 2.1 and 3.2 years for those age 55 and younger.
